Working with Files

What AI Can Do with Files

AI can read and extract information from your documents:
  • Summarize key points
  • Answer questions about content
  • Extract specific data
  • Compare multiple documents
  • Generate reports
Example:
Summarize the main findings from this research paper
Upload code files for intelligent analysis:
  • Code review and suggestions
  • Bug detection and fixes
  • Add documentation and comments
  • Refactor for better performance
  • Convert between languages
Example:
Review this React component and suggest performance improvements
Vision models can understand image content:
  • Describe scenes and objects
  • Extract text (OCR)
  • Read charts and diagrams
  • Convert designs to code
  • Compare multiple images
Example:
Extract all text from this screenshot and format it as markdown
Switch to GPT-4o, Claude 3.5, or Gemini for image analysis.
Work with spreadsheets and data files:
  • Statistical analysis
  • Find trends and patterns
  • Clean and format data
  • Generate visualizations
  • Answer data questions
Example:
Analyze this sales data and create a Python script to visualize monthly trends

Files in Context

Files you upload become part of the conversation: Context behavior:
  • Files remain available throughout the chat
  • AI can reference files from earlier in the conversation
  • File content counts toward conversation context
  • Large files may slow response generation
For best performance, start a new chat when working with many large files rather than continuing a very long conversation.

  • Analyze your usage
  • Migrate to other platforms

Best Practices

Help yourself find conversations later:
  • Rename immediately after starting important chats
  • Include project, topic, or client name
  • Add dates for time-sensitive work
  • Use consistent naming scheme
Good examples:
  • “Blog Post: AI Ethics - Draft 2”
  • “Debug User Auth Issue - Prod”
  • “Q1 2024 Sales Analysis”
Poor examples:
  • “New Chat”
  • “Code”
  • “Help”
Group related conversations:
  • Create project per client
  • Organize by topic or domain
  • Separate work and personal
  • Archive completed projects
Project structure example:
📁 Acme Corp Website
  💬 Initial Requirements Discussion
  💬 Homepage Design Review
  💬 Backend API Planning
  💬 Deployment Checklist
Don’t rely on search alone:
  • Star conversations you reference often
  • Keep starred list small and focused
  • Unstar when no longer needed
  • Review starred list monthly
Good candidates for starring:
  • Code snippets to reuse
  • Writing style examples
  • Complex solutions you’ll reference
  • Active project discussions
Keep your sidebar manageable:
  • Archive completed projects
  • Archive old experiments
  • Set up auto-archiving
  • Review and archive monthly
Benefits:
  • Faster sidebar loading
  • Easier to find active work
  • Less visual clutter
  • Searchable when needed
Manage your storage quota:
  • Delete unused files monthly
  • Remove duplicate uploads
  • Compress large files before uploading
  • Check storage usage regularly
In Files page:
  1. Sort by size (largest first)
  2. Review large files
  3. Delete or download and remove
  4. Clear old test files

Troubleshooting

Try these steps:
  1. Use search (Cmd/Ctrl + K) with keywords
  2. Check the Archived section
  3. Look in relevant projects
  4. Try broader search terms
  5. Check date filters aren’t too restrictive
Search tips:
  • Search message content, not just titles
  • Try different related keywords
  • Use date filters: after:YYYY-MM-DD
  • Check if conversation was deleted
Common causes and solutions:File too large:
  • Check your plan’s file size limit
  • Compress the file
  • Split into smaller parts
Unsupported format:
  • Verify file type is supported
  • Convert to supported format
  • Check file isn’t corrupted
Network issues:
  • Check internet connection
  • Try uploading again
  • Upload smaller files first
Quota exceeded:
  • Check storage usage in settings
  • Delete old files
  • Upgrade plan for more storage
Checklist:
  1. ✅ Using vision-capable model (GPT-4o, Claude 3.5, Gemini)
  2. ✅ Image format supported (JPEG, PNG, WebP)
  3. ✅ Image under size limit
  4. ✅ Asked specific question about image
To fix:
  1. Switch to vision model using model selector
